The Rehabilitation Center "Il Pollaio del Re"
is located in Maremma, Tuscany, not far from Grosseto. It is a
location chosen primarily for its propitious climate and geographic
position that create an ideal environment for the well-being of
farmyard animals.
The enterprise is motivated by growing demand in recent years
to rediscover and to preserve important genetic heritage of our
country, as well as to create a permanent reference point for
those involved in the research of ancient Italian and mediterranean
avicultural races (see also Membership
directory and Reasons).
The center, now also an Association,
has been functioning for some time and deals primarily with the
preservation, protection, and development of an Italian avicultural
biodiversity that is seriously threatened by extinction. Considering
the variety hosted by the Pollaio del Re, it seeks also to provide
a permanent exhibition for scientific purposes, didactic purposes
(recognized as a Fattoria Didattica di Eccellenza,) and social
purposes.

You Tube and Facebook, more video's and photographs)
In addition to the important Italian races, there
are also foreign races that have become essential to our country
in recent decades. For more information see the Table
of Races - each race is accompanied by a descriptive chart
that explains in laymans terms the origins, evolution, and changes
in selection from past to present. N.B., in order to procure
races raised by us, or to request a shipment of eggs, it is necessary
to suscribe to the Association, as per our statute. (For more
information, follow the link for Association).
In collaboration with ARSIA
and Professor Manuela Gualtieri of the University of Florence,
we are beginning a project focused on the study of morphological
features and genetic analysis, with the hopes to create the first
statistical registry of some recognized breeds and of those closest
to extinction.
The project was conceived and actuated by Viviano Masconni, who
has dedicated years of attention and research in the field of
aviculture (see articles 199820072008 2011
) . The project gets its name from the namesake site www.ilpollaiodelre.com,
which in recent years has granted us supervision of our country
and has given us a clear idea of the number of breeders and breeds,
on both a national and international level.
The enterprise, supported by the Municipality of Scansano (GR),
the Province of Grosseto and the Legambiente, has been promoted
also in television and radio. For the purposes of correct health
management, the center The Pollaio del Re has consulted the expertise
of professionals in the field of veterinary aviculture and avifauna,
such as Dr Marco Aloisi,
Dr A. Zanon, Dr G. Nuzzo, and other important foreign collaborators
such as Dr Elio Corti, ect.
Among the most important activities, we note the participation
as an exhibit of information materials and illustrations at Festambiente
in August 2008, organized by Legambiente
with the hopes to develop a campaign of sensibility
and information. There are also didactic visits for schools of
every type and grade, reguarding the study and formation of various
subjects-the Pollaio del Re is a real "open sky laboratory."
The development of this project was made possible by the concrete
support of the region by theMunicipality
of Scansano, (Mayor Flavio M. Morini), Festambiente
(Legambiente
- Angelo Gentili), AICS
(President Vasco Pellegrini), and all the volunteers (of various
associations and foreign universities). We proceed with this project
thanks to their contributions and continual interest.
All this is just a small step in the quest to shroud the culture
of this important agricultural, environmental, scientific and
cultural field that belongs to us and is worth protecting and
preserving. The real progress is in the preservation of the
past, without which we wouldn't have the future.
For more information as to how to arrive, visiting schedules,
afternoon snacks, etc., and for initiatives of the Association,
don't hesitate to contact us by e-mail,
with short important updates. Viviano Masconni
